Why Fall Prevention Therapy?
Falls are a serious issue for seniors – accounting for more than 32,000 deaths annually. According to the CDC, every year more than 25% of adults 65 or older will have a fall. This amounts to 36 million falls among seniors each year, with 3 million older adults going to the emergency room and 800,000 being hospitalized for fall injuries.
Older adults are at a much higher risk of falling due to many factors, including: balance and/or walking problems, vision changes, medications, low blood pressure, vestibular (inner ear) problems, neuropathy, altered sensation in the feet, and more. Senior falls occur most often in the bathroom when sitting or standing while using the toilet or shower, at night in a dark bedroom, when getting up quickly, or when tripping on the way to the bathroom.
While it’s not possible to completely prevent all falls, physical therapy that focuses on balance and strength training can dramatically reduce the risk of falling. If you or a loved one has suffered a fall, or has been screened as ‘at risk’ of falling by a healthcare provider, balance and fall prevention therapy can help you avoid many of the risks of falling so that you can prevent injury and continue to lead a full and independent life.
