MANUAL THERAPY MODALITIES
MANUAL THERAPY
MODALITIES
Massage Therapy
Physical therapy massage – also known as manual therapy – is different from a regular spa massage. In addition to providing relief from muscle pain and tension, PT massage focuses on rehabilitating muscle and joint strength, mobility, and function. Unlike massage therapists, physical therapists are medically trained, earning a doctorate degree that includes advanced coursework in anatomy & physiology. Integrating PT manual massage therapy into rehabilitation has been clinically shown to help increase range of motion, alleviate pain & speed recovery.
Stretches
Stretching is a staple of physical therapy, because of its ability to restore ideal range of motion to the joints. Stretching is prescribed to increase muscle length and ROM, and/or to align collagen fibers during healing muscle. Therapeutic stretches can also correct movement patterns that are contributing to tissue strain, damage and pain. By improving quality of movement, stretching can enhance athletic performance, increase work productivity, and improve a patient’s ability to perform their daily activities.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release (MFR) physical therapy focuses on releasing muscular shortness and tightness – to reduce pain and stiffness, and increase range of motion. It is often helpful for patients who have lost flexibility or functioning due to an injury, illness, or surgery. MFR can often successfully reduce ongoing back, shoulder, or hip pain – as well as stiffness and discomfort in any area containing soft tissue. MFR can be used to treat symptoms of TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and many other chronic conditions.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is used to relieve chronic or acute pain. It can also improve the symptoms of a wide variety of conditions and illnesses. Clinical-grade cups are placed on the treatment area and a vacuum is created to pull the skin upward. This breaks open the tiny blood vessels under the skin, which stimulates the body’s wound healing responses. The body immediately sends increased blood, plasma, and other healing factors to the area – which accelerates tissue repair.
IASTM | Scraping
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM) – often called “scraping” – is a centuries old technique that uses traction to treat the skin, nerves, muscles and tissue. Medical grade stainless steel tools of different sizes and angles are dragged along the body to help release muscle and fascia (connective tissue) restrictions and adhesions. IASTM can help relieve pain, increase range of motion, treat scar tissue, trigger healing response, and reduce swelling.
Dry Needling
Dry Needling can alleviate both acute & chronic pain, increase range of motion, improve strength, and speed up recovery from injury. It is a clinically proven treatment in which very thin needles are used to relax “trigger points” that restore normal muscle strength, tone, length, coordination & function. Also called “intramuscular stimulation” (IMS), it produces an involuntary spinal cord reflex that results in muscle relaxation and releases endorphins and serum cortisol for pain relief.
